The Guardian view on the government’s corporate reforms: entrenching neoliberalism, not ending it

#Andy Burnham #asset #government #Jobs #launch #New York #New York Times #PEN #politics #reforms #society #UK

Editorial | A recent consultation on corporate reporting prizes the interests of shareholders over society. It’s a step in the wrong directionThe question of what corporations are for is deeply political. In a 1970 article for the New York Times, Milton Friedman argued that the “social responsibility of business is to increase its profits”. The idea that CEOs should worry about providing good jobs was “pure and unadulterated socialism”, he wrote. Friedman and his fellow neoliberals saw companies as vehicles for enforcing their politics. Their ideas endured: UK bosses are now paid 130 times more than average workers.Despite Andy Burnham’s pledge to end neoliberalism, a 12-week consultation recently launched by his government risks entrenching it. The consultation was first announced as part of the Starmer government’s crusade against “red tape”. The average annual report for some businesses now runs to 98,000 words, and no doubt there are areas that could be simplified. But the consultation proposes removing vital information and presumes that company reports primarily serve shareholders, rather than other stakeholders. Both are steps in the wrong direction. Discarded Christmas trees found a new purpose in Jamaica Bay, where they transformed into natural breakwaters at a wildlife refuge. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says AI industry needs to give safety measures time to catch up

#agent #agents #AI #Anthropic #ChatGPT #intelligence #investor #New York #OpenAI #stock #wall

NEW YORK — The CEO of Anthropic said Saturday the artificial-intelligence industry should slow its fast-moving development to give safety measures time to catch up. Without such a slowdown, Dario Amodei warned that within six to 12 months, AI could be capable of leading a swarm of agents that could take over the entire internet. The warning comes as worries about AI grow inside and outside the industry and reports continue to emerge about increasingly powerful systems that solve problems beyond human capacity but could also go rogue and carry out other, more harmful tasks. The worries have grown so loud that the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, said in an interview with Fortune that his company would wait until next year to start selling its stock to investors on Wall Street as it focuses on safety. Amodei is one of the leading voices in AI, and he offered a plan in a post on his website to increase checks on the industry. He said Anthropic is already undertaking one part of it on its own, while the others would require coordination across the broad industry and with govern

‘I love the boldness of modernism’: New York fashion week goes highbrow

#charge #Georgia #Muse #New York #school

Georgia O’Keeffe inspires the latest Calvin Klein while Michael Kors feels indebted to Alexander CalderCalvin Klein has taken a highbrow turn in the two years since Veronica Leoni took charge. The Italian designer, a philosophy graduate who was schooled in the chic design studios of Jil Sander and Celine, has shifted away from jeans, boxer shorts and logos, stripping the brand to its minimalist bones: slip dresses and simple coats, slim skirts and crisp T-shirts.Leoni called this the “discipline of removal”. Her muse this season was Georgia O’Keeffe, an artist who the brand’s namesake founder admired. Klein bought O’Keeffe’s painting Summer Days in 1983 for $1m, subsequently donating it to the Whitney Museum. A checked pattern taken from O’Keeffe’s distinctive capsule wardrobe of utilitarian chic appeared on this catwalk as a wrap coat, hardware-free with a fabric belt and no buttons. Continue reading...

US stocks jump as oil eases, inflation comes in near expectations

#Brent crude #eastern #Inflation #Iran #Nasdaq #New York #oil #oil price #Oil prices #prices #stock #United States #war

NEW YORK — U.S. stocks are rebounding Friday and clawing back much of their losses for the week after oil prices eased off their recent spurt. An update on inflation across the United States that came in close to economists’ expectations, even if prices are still rising too quickly for everyone's liking, also helped calm the market. The S&P 500 climbed 1 percent and was on track to break a four-day losing streak, its longest since June. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 479 points, or 0.9 percent, as of 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.2 percent higher. They got help from a pullback in oil prices, which had jumped to their highest levels since May because of the ongoing war with Iran. The price for a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, fell 2.5 percent to $104.93 after getting near $110 overnight. That took a bit of pressure off inflation, which remains stubbornly high. A report on Friday showed that U.S. consumers had to pay prices for gasoline, food and other costs of living that were 3.4 percent higher last month than a year earlier. Whi
