Korea's ICT exports mark record high on sustained AI investments

#AI #artificial intelligence #Export #Import #Infrastructure #investment #semiconductor #Tech #trade #trade surplus

Korea's exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products marked a historic high in August, driven by sustained global investments in artificial intelligence (AI), government data showed Monday. Outbound shipments of ICT products reached $59.98 billion last month, up 162.6 percent from $22.84 billion a year earlier, the Ministry of Science and ICT said in a press release. ICT products accounted for over 60 percent of the country's total exports in the month for the first time, the ministry added. Imports in the sector rose 48.8 percent on-year to $18.61 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $41.37 billion. It marked the first time that Korea's ICT surplus topped the $40 billion mark, the ministry said. By product, semiconductor exports surged 209 percent on-year to $46.67 billion, as demand related to AI infrastructure continued amid expanded investments from global big-tech companies. Exports of computers and communications equipment spiked 383.1 percent to $6.4 billion, while mobile phone shipments increased 23.2 percent to $1.64 billion, the data showed. However, outb

Trump's $5,000 checks require Congress to approve, Johnson says

#dividend #Fund #Inflation #investment #Ireland #Li #R #tariff #tariffs #Trump

President Trump's proposal to send adult U.S. citizens $5,000 dividend checks would require congressional approval, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said on Sunday. Why it matters: Trump and his top officials claim they can send the checks without Congress — even with the prospect of them costing upward of $1.3 trillion. What they're saying: "He'd need Congress to act," Johnson said in a CNN interview.Asked by NBC's ""Meet the Press" if he'd commit that the checks will be sent, Johnson said "I commit that Congress will work through it and find consensus on that like they have to do everything else."Driving the news: President Trump, at the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas, said this week he'd order a $5,000 check — a "Trump Dividend" — if Republicans retained control of the House and the Senate.Trump and other officials have said the dividend would be funded by tariffs, gains on investments and other income. The president told reporters before departing Ireland on Sunday that "the $5,000 checks are going forward" and that he had thought of this plan "a while ago."When a reporter asked why not do the checks now instead of after the midterm elections, given Republicans currently control Congress, Trump replied: "Because if the Democrats get in, our country will be in shambles."The big picture: Such a massive stimulus also comes with significant economic risks, both to the deficit and inflation. The idea has already met bipartisan opposition, though Trump has insisted the offer and the checks will happen. Editor's note: This story has been updated with new details throughout.

‘Trump accounts’ promise to mint child millionaires. Experts have their doubts

#affordable #Boom #budget #federal government #Fund #Georgia #growth #investment #KID #market #Return #stock #Stock Market #Trump

President has hyped growth of federal investment accounts to help US children – for his own political gainSince returning to the White House, Donald Trump has scrapped rules that made childcare more affordable and pushed to cut funding for the nation’s public schools. But with midterm elections fast approaching and his approval ratings very low, the US president has repeatedly trumpeted a two-month-old program designed to help the nation’s children. That program, unhumbly named “Trump accounts”, calls for the federal government to give a one-time $1,000 seed deposit to every newborn whose family applies. In campaign speeches this summer, Trump has sought to milk these accounts for maximum political advantage, making big promises about how much these accounts will help the nation’s children. In a speech in Las Vegas last month, Trump hailed the program, saying: “It’s really giving [children] a head start on the American dream… They start off with $1,000 … and they can end up with $100,000, $200,000, $300,000” and if the stock market booms, “you’d end up with $1m”. Korea prevails in $196 mil. investor-state dispute against Chinese investor

An ad hoc committee of the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) rejected a Chinese investor's bid to overturn an earlier award in favor of the Korean government in an investor-state dispute worth 264.1 billion won ($196 million), the justice ministry said Sunday. The ICSID ad hoc committee dismissed Chinese investor Fengzhen Min's annulment application in its entirety at around 5:25 a.m. Saturday (Korea time), according to the ministry. The committee also ordered the Chinese investor to pay the Korean government about 1.51 billion won in costs for the annulment proceedings, plus interest. "The decision reaffirmed the principle that investments made in violation of domestic law are not entitled to protection under the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) system," the ministry said. The dispute stemmed from loans Min received from a Korean bank in connection with the acquisition and development of an office building in Beijing. In 2007, Min established Pi Korea in Korea and raised 380 billion won through project financing loans arranged and guaranteed by Wo
