Foreign currency deposits rise to fresh record high in September

#Bank #central bank #currency #Dollar #Euro #foreign currency #Holding #Yen

Foreign currency deposits in Korea rose to a fresh record high in September, driven by a sharp increase in dollar savings, central bank data showed Wednesday. Outstanding foreign currency-denominated deposits held by residents stood at $154.7 billion at the end of September, up $14 billion from a month earlier, according to findings by the Bank of Korea (BOK).

It marked the highest level since the BOK began compiling the data in June 2012. The reading has increased every month since April. Residents include Korean citizens, foreigners who have lived in the country for more than six months and foreign companies. The data excludes interbank deposits.

By currency, U.S. dollar-denominated reserves increased by $12.99 billion to $132.9 billion, marking the highest balance since June 2012. Euro-denominated savings also gained $0.37 billion to $9.53 billion, and Japanese yen deposits increased $0.55 billion to $9.49 billion. Corporate foreign currency deposits rose $13.1 billion to $136.6 billion, while individual holdings increased $0.98 billion to $18.11 billion.

US ends visa waiver for Chinese over birth tourism, people smuggling allegations

Washington has suspended visa-free entry for Chinese visitors to the Northern Mariana Islands amid allegations of birth tourism and people smuggling in the US territory. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Monday the suspension of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Economic Vitality and Security Travel Authorization Program.

US Senator Mike Lee hailed the move on social media, calling the program a "Biden-era loophole for Chinese birth tourism" and praising the Trump administration for having "closed" the pathway. The program, also known as EVS-TAP, allowed pre-screened Chinese nationals to visit the islands for up to 14 days without a US visa.

Under the new decision, existing authorizations will be cancelled from October 30, although Chinese nationals already in the Pacific Ocean territory may complete their authorized stays. More than 3,000 Chinese nationals entered under EVS-TAP in financial year 2025. The DHS said it had found "good cause" to suspend the program as "PRC [People's Republic of China] nationals are almost certainly exploiting EVS-TAP".

More than 1,400 people joined forces across Seoul’s Han River parks this month, picking up litter, learning recycling rules and promoting bicycle safety in a city campaign to keep its popular riverside spaces clean and safe. The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday that 1,486 citizens, corporate employees and volunteers took part in three Fall Hangang Volunteer Day events held at Ichon, Ttukseom and Yeouido Hangang parks between Oct.

13 and Oct. 24. The campaign, organized under the theme “Keep Hangang clean, keep Hangang safe,” combined litter pick-up with environmental education and public safety programs. The first event, held Oct. 13 at Ichon Hangang Park, brought together 50 corporate volunteers who collected trash along park walkways.

The second gathering, on Oct. 17 at Ttukseom Hangang Park, drew 95 participants for litter collection and campaigns promoting environmental awareness and safe park use. Yeouido Hangang Park hosted the largest event on Saturday, attracting 1,341 people, including children and adults who took part in environmental missions and quizzes about

Regulatory standoff delays debut of Seoul's 1st modern streetcar line

#billion #commercial operation #corridor #government #launch #Seoul #Urban

The launch of Korea's first modern streetcar network has encountered a temporary regulatory roadblock, forcing city officials to push back the line's planned December debut as local authorities work to finalize safety protocols along shared pedestrian and roadway corridors. The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday that full commercial operation of the Wirye Line tram — a 5.4-kilometer wireless streetcar project — will be postponed into next year.

Although physical construction is 97 percent complete, the delay stems from protracted disputes among government agencies over traffic safety infrastructure and regulatory jurisdiction. Spanning 12 stations, the 350.3 billion won ($253 million) transit project connects Macheon Station on Seoul Subway Line 5 with Bokjeong Station and Namwirye Station on Line 8 and the Suin-Bundang Line.

The line represents a major milestone for urban transit in Korea, marking the return of streetcars to the capital for the first time since the city decommissioned its original tram network in 1968. It is also the nation’s first transit line to deplo

An exhibition exploring the intricate designs and techniques behind Korea’s mother-of-pearl lacquerware has drawn more than 16,000 visitors during a two-year international tour across the United States, Canada and Japan, introducing audiences abroad to a traditional craft shaped by generations of artisans. The Seoul Museum of Craft Art said Wednesday that its special exhibition, “The Design Room of Najeon Masters,” concluded its overseas run Saturday after stops in Los Angeles, Ottawa, Tokyo and Osaka in 2025 and 2026. The exhibition attracted 7,556 visitors in North America and 8,427 in Japan, according to the museum, with more than 90 percent of respondents to visitor satisfaction surveys describing it as an opportunity to discover the beauty and depth of Korean traditional crafts.

Trump announces plan to weaken methane rules for oil and gas companies

#Boom #Compliance #CTA #Don #economy #energy #Fund #Gas #Guidance #index #Infrastructure #Iran #Li #Mexico #oil #R #Regulation #Support #trade #Trump #United States

The Trump administration is moving to weaken a regulation that requires oil and gas companies to limit leaks of methane, a more potent driver of climate change than carbon dioxide.President Donald Trump announced the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed regulation at an event in Lubbock, Texas, on Tuesday evening.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said earlier this month that the agency was “days not weeks” away from issuing the proposal, roughly outlining its contents.“We’ve been working on this for a long time,” Trump said at the rally. “We were working on this before the war broke out,” he added, referring to the Feb.

28 attack on Iran. Get Climate Coach newsletterNews and guidance on climate, science and technology. Sign up for freeThe move comes even as several major oil companies, including Chevron and ExxonMobil, have long supported direct federal regulation of methane, arguing that industry-wide rules are needed to curb leaks.

But that support has not always extended to every provision: The companies have at times pressed regulators to narrow monitoring and reporting requirements.Smaller independent producers and their trade groups have more aggressively fought methane rules as burdensome and costly. Executives at some of those firms — including several major donors to Trump — have pushed to roll them back.Methane, which traps about 80 times as much heat as carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, accounts for roughly 12 percent of greenhouse gases, according to an EPA webpage that the agency removed from its site after Trump took office.

Another EPA report says methane “emissions represent the greatest opportunity for low or no-cost mitigation” of climate change.Last year, Zeldin said the rule aimed at curbing methane leaks and dozens of other regulations were being reconsidered in what he has called the largest deregulatory action in U.S. history, aimed at saving businesses and consumers money.

Environmental advocates say any savings are more than outweighed by public health costs and damage to the economy caused by climate change and increasing weather extremes.“Americans must be able to afford to heat their homes in the winter and fill up their car and drive to work,” Zeldin said in a statement earlier this month, before the proposal’s release, while attending the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association’s annual meeting.

“They can’t do that when the people producing the energy are weighed down by unnecessary burdens.”The 2023 Biden-era rule requires companies to reduce methane emissions from new and existing oil and gas infrastructure, demanding monitoring and retrofitting old equipment to reduce leaks. The standard also instituted curbs on volatile organic compounds, which can cause air pollution that is harmful to breath or warm the climate.“The oil and gas industry says it’s a ‘good-faith’ partner eager to help craft regulations, but time and time again it’s worked behind the scenes to delay and weaken them.

As a result, the United States today emits more methane from its oil and gas sector than any other country in the world,” Julia Kane, a researcher with Fieldnotes, an oil and gas watchdog group, said in a statement.“Now, Lee Zeldin’s EPA is giving oil and gas corporations exactly what they’ve long wanted: a toothless methane standard they can use to pretend they’re well-regulated, all while they continue to knowingly leak and flare dangerous amounts of the heat-trapping gas.”Most Read From The Washington PostBoomer women are dating after divorce.

Here’s how he keeps his brain healthy.Grand jury declines to indict Cassidy Hutchinson over Jan. 6 testimonyTrump defends White House redecorating — and Cheesecake Factory — from Obama’s mockingThe Trump EPA proposal is expected to reverse the 2023 rule’s ban on routine flaring, allowing companies to burn off excess gas rather than capturing it.

The draft policy would also eliminate the Super Emitter Program, which required companies to take action on major methane leaks when detected by third-party watchdogs.Methane has accounted for about 30 percent of global temperature rise since the industrial revolution, according to the International Energy Agency, and the rollback is alarming environmental advocates. The proposed regulation would also change standards for “marginal wells,” which produce only 6 percent of U.S. oil and gas but account for about half of the sector’s methane emissions.Zeldin said in October that the old rules wrongly lumped together “mom and pop” oil and gas producers, which he said could be put out of business by the rules, with multinationals such as Exxon and Chevron.“Part of this process has been to keep the concerns that are coming in from the application of [the regulations] to these far smaller operations and how to get the regulation right for them,” Zeldin told reporters in a briefing at EPA headquarters.

Myron Ebell, who ran the EPA’s transition team going into Trump’s first term, praised the potential regulation change for trying to “level the playing field” between Big Oil and independent producers. The EPA weakened enforcement of existing methane regulations last year, saying the agency’s “enforcement and compliance will no longer focus on methane emissions from oil and gas facilities” in a memo on March 12, 2025. The Environmental Defense Fund, an advocacy group, estimates that additional gas released or flared in the first year under that policy could have otherwise supplied nearly 19 million households. In November, the EPA also delayed deadlines to comply with many of the 2023 standards until 2027.This article originally appeared on Washington Post at https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2026/10/27/trump-announce-relaxed-rules-oil-firms-methane-leaks/

Korea's bourse operator on Wednesday activated a buy-side sidecar for the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) as the stock index rose sharply. Program trading for the KOSPI-listed shares was suspended for five minutes at 9:53 a.m., according to the Korea Exchange (KRX). After opening 2.23 percent higher, the KOSPI added 255.92 points, or 4.54 percent, to 5,894.26 as of 9:55 a.m.

The index rallied as strong artificial intelligence (AI)-driven semiconductor earnings lifted investor sentiment ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. Before the opening bell, SK hynix Inc. reported record-high revenue and operating profit for the third quarter, driven by robust memory chip demand, and announced a shareholder return program worth more than 100 trillion won ($75.3 billion) for 2026. A buy-side sidecar is triggered when the KOSPI 200 Futures Index rises 5 percent or more for at least one minute.
