Immigration restrictions, rising living costs and strains in US-India relations are testing support for President Donald Trump among some Indian-Americans who backed the Republican Party in 2024, analysts say, ahead of November’s midterm elections. A survey released in August by AAPI Data and Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote found that 66 per cent of Indian-American respondents favoured Democratic candidates for the US House of Representatives, compared with 18 per cent for Republicans....

Ex-justice minister, special counsel appeal martial law-related ruling

#ban #charge #immigration #Justice #law #martial law #President #prison #prison sentence #prosecutor #Seoul #Supreme Court #Yoon

Former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae and special counsel Cho Eun-suk have both appealed to the Supreme Court, challenging an appellate court ruling that reduced Park's prison sentence from 25 years to nine years over his role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration, judicial officials said Wednesday.

Park and Cho's team filed their appeals with the Seoul High Court on Tuesday, the officials said. Park was indicted on charges of playing a key role in Yoon's martial law imposition on Dec. 3, 2024, and participating in an alleged insurrection. The charges included ordering the possible dispatch of prosecutors to a martial law-related organ, putting Korea Immigration Service (KIS) officials in charge of travel bans on standby and directing the Korea Correctional Service (KCS) to assess detention centers' available capacity.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Park to 25 years in prison after finding him guilty of all charges brought by Cho. But the Seoul High Court last week reduced his prison sentence to nine years, acquitting him of charges related to the KIS an

Lee warns against 'irresponsible extremism' jeopardizing reforms

#agenda #attack #critics #Democratic Party #Extremism #Extremist #extremists #leader #Lee #Lee Jae Myung #Lin #President #Prosecution #reforms #target #targeting

President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday warned against "irresponsible extremism" that he said is demanding excessive reform, insisting such extremism may jeopardize effective reforms. Lee made the remarks on the social platform X in response to a user demanding he apologize for describing his critics as "irresponsible extremists."

"There are those who sincerely call for prosecution reform for the country and the people, but there are also those who, in reality, hinder prosecution reform by only calling for clarity or making excessive, inflammatory demands for their hidden political and personal agendas," the president wrote.

"Calling for 'all-or-nothing' approaches as if they are the only true leader of reform and attacking those who are genuinely seeking reform while inciting fears of failure to take advantage of the urgent desire of some people to reform is irresponsible extremism," he added. Lee's message was widely seen as targeting hard-liners within his ruling Democratic Party of Korea who accused Lee of backtracking on prosecution reform, the party's long-standing agenda.

Korea chases global top 100, but world's leading universities take different paths

#breaking #Chase #Don #higher education #London #President #Seoul #Singapore #universities #Vice President

SINGAPORE, LONDON, SEOUL — Breaking into the world’s top 100 has become a common ambition among Korean universities. However, the world’s leading university ranking agencies have a surprising response for institutions chasing higher positions: Stop chasing the rankings. "The dog should wag the tail, the tail should not wag the dog," said Phil Baty, chief global affairs officer at Times Higher Education (THE), cautioning universities against allowing rankings to dictate their priorities.

"Rankings should inform university strategy and decision-making, not drive them." Ben Sowter, senior vice president at QS, raised a similar concern, warning that universities risk losing their competitive edge if they all pursue similar strategies. “The important thing is that you build a really nuanced strategy where you don’t have a whole group of universities trying to do exactly the same thing as each other,” he said.

“In that context you end up competing with yourselves rather than necessarily distinguishing yourselves internationally.” Global university rankings are evolving to reflect

Hanwha Defense USA to take control of Philly Shipyard in internal restructuring

#Anderson #control #defense #Executive #government #joint venture #navy #Philadelphia #President #restructuring #vessels #Washington

WASHINGTON — Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA) said Tuesday it will acquire a controlling stake in Hanwha Philly Shipyard, part of a broader internal restructuring aimed at strengthening the South Korean conglomerate's U.S. naval shipbuilding operations. Under a restructuring plan announced in September, Hanwha Systems Co. will sell its 60 percent stake in the shipyard to Hanwha Defense USA Shipbuilding LLC, a joint venture involving HDUSA and Hanwha FutureProof.

Hanwha Ocean Co. will retain its 40 percent stake. HDUSA said the move will bring the Philadelphia-based shipyard under its leadership as Hanwha seeks to transform the facility into a dual-use shipyard capable of building vessels for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. "As HDUSA continues to grow its multi-domain presence across the U.S., bringing the Philly Shipyard under HDUSA will further align our government and commercial shipbuilding efforts," HDUSA President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Coulter said in a statement.

Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Tom Anderson, president of U.S. shipbuilding at HDUSA, will oversee

Letter | Responding to a Guardian investigation into trafficking, former British ambassador to Colombia Keith Morris says the ‘war on drugs’ has failedI congratulate the Guardian on this investigation (Latin American organised crime ‘may operate in 16 European countries’, 13 October). It has already prompted a strong call from the former Colombian vice-president Marta Lucía Ramírez for effective international cooperation to counter the transnational criminal threat.I have followed the “war on drugs” pretty closely since I was the British ambassador to Colombia in the heyday of Pablo Escobar, but I was still shocked to learn of the scale of the Latin American criminal presence in Europe, including supposedly political insurgents such as the Colombian ELN and various Farc dissident factions.

The fivefold increase in the cocaine trade in the last decade has boosted organised crime on both sides of the Atlantic. It underlines dramatically the failure of the “war on drugs”. Continue reading...
